Billy Joe Tolliver won the 24th annual American Century Championship at Edgewood in South Lake Tahoe, beating 1990 (yes, 1990!!!) winner Mark Rypien on the 3rd playoff hole. Both Tolliver and Rypien are former NFL quarterbacks which bodes well for the job market for QBs after playing in the NFL. Tolliver seems to always be in contention winning the tournament for the fourth time.
Mark Mulder, a retired MLB pitcher, finished 3rd and former NFL quarterback Chris Chandler who led through the 16th hold in the final round tied for 4th with NBA Golden State Warrior star Stephen Curry who lead after 36-holes. Defending champ and four-time winner Dan Quinn ended up down the scoreboard unable to mount a charge in the event that uses a modified Stableford scoring format that awards graduated points for pars or better and a deduction of points for double bogy or worse. Former NFL QB Jim McMahon took the prize for most colors ever jammed on a single pair of golf pants.
Held annually in July, the popular Tahoe golf tournament covered by NBC Sports is billed as the “Greatest Sports Party on the Planet” and sure seemed like it once again.
